| samenvatting | The involvement of youth in organized drug crimes constitutes a widely shared concern among policymakers and practitioners across various European countries, including Belgium. Media coverage frequently reports on incidents in cities like Antwerp and Brussels, where youth are involved in drug-related violence, including street explosions, home shootings, and even assassinations. In response there are a growing number of bottom-up, local initiatives from both policy and practice, aimed at understanding this phenomenon and addressing it, with a particular focus on preventing (further) youth involvement in organized drug crimes. Drawing on scientific insights in this area is challenging, as (international) scientific research on youth involvement in drug crimes remains in its early stages. Yet, a thorough understanding of this phenomenon is a crucial puzzle piece in developing preventive approaches. Without such understanding, well-intentioned initiatives, that are not tailored to the target group or supported by scientific insights, may fail to reach the intended audience or achieve their goal, namely: reducing youth involvement in organized drug crime and increasing their disengagement from it. By mapping existing international research through a scoping review, we aim to identify what is known and what remains unknown about the profiles and criminal careers of youth involved in organized drug crime. Doing so, we aim to (1) enable the development of a targeted research agenda and (2) contribute to bridging the gap between scientific knowledge, policy, and practice, hereby aiming to strengthening the development and application of evidence-informed prevention initiatives on youth involvement in organized drug crimes in Belgium. |
