Fragmented oversight? The evolution of police oversight in Belgium
In Belgium, police oversight has been assigned to a number of bodies specifically set up for this purpose. This sets Belgium apart from other European countries. In this paper, we will give an overview of the evolution of police oversight in Belgium before, during and after the reform, and we will discuss the
division of competences between the different supervisory bodies (Comité P, AIG, Diensten Intern Toezicht). The purpose of this paper is to outline the development of police oversight, show the evolution in complaints, clarify the division between the oversight bodies and show where there is overlap in tasks.
We will conclude with some recommendations to improve and/or optimize police oversight.
