samenvatting

This contribution examines the phenomenon of bullying among pupils in the second stage of secondary education. While bullying is a long-known and widespread phenomenon, studies have only in recent years paid attention to new forms of bullying: cyber bullying is the general term for a series of bullying that are executed through contemporary technological devices such as mobile phones, chat rooms, e-mail, ... In this contribution we investigate the occurrence of classical forms of bullying and cyber bullying on the basis of a self-report study that was conducted in Ghent. The results show that among the traditional forms of bullying relational bullying occurs more frequently than the other traditional forms of bullying. Concerning cyber bullying, a distinction was made between direct and indirect cyber bullying. The analyses of self-reported offending and victimization indicate that direct verbal bullying is most often reported. Among the different types of indirect cyber bullying denigration is most often reported. There appears to be a strong correlation between self-reported offending and victimization for traditional bullying and cyber bullying. Nevertheless, different subgroups can be distinguished.
