A sip too many to cycle: An analysis of the prevalence, motivations and consequences of cycling while intoxicated
The aim of this study is to gain insight into the prevalence of intoxicated cycling at night, why young people choose a bicycle as transport modus when intoxicated and what they know about the penalization of intoxicated cycling. Two methods of data collection were used: a survey and breathalyzer in the field (n=68) and an online survey (n=2709). Results from the field study show that 56% was cycling to or from the city centre while intoxicated. Participants in the online survey report that they cycle while intoxicated 5.3 times per month on average. The majority choose for the bicycle because it is the fastest way to get home. The penalization is underestimated and only 5% of the participants of the online survey has been stopped by the police for cycling while intoxicated. These results emphasize the need for more prevention campaigns focusing on both the consequences of cycling while intoxicated and the awareness of penalization thereof.
