abstract

Effectiveness and integrity are vital partners in public management and good governance. We review the traditional tenants of the New Public Management, and add to them the important role of citizen participation in the management and oversight of government services. We consider New York City as a primary example in many cases. The ‘Compstating’ of the NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau provides an excellent study of successful, data driven public management combined with increased citizen participation in the fight against public corruption.
