samenvatting

In this chapter I examine the features of relationships that impact on women’s desistance from crime. Despite widespread portrayals of women lawbreakers’ relationships as essentially risky, they have dynamic and complex implications that cannot be easily reduced to solely negative influences. In particular, the interaction of social support with desisting women’s intra-psychic experiences illuminates some of the complex effects that social relationships can have on desistance. Here, I focus on the consequences of some of the less researched relationships of desisting women – with friends, parents and professionals.
