samenvatting

In the field of drug treatment and research recovery has become more important. Previously the focus of recovery was primarily on the absence of symptoms (clinical recovery), currently, the idea that recovery is a lengthy process in which individuals, through addressing problems in different life domains, work towards a satisfying quality of life is gaining more importance (personal recovery). Since the focus of this paper is on the lived experiences, we explore the perspectives of individuals in recovery. This paper focuses on the experiences of problem drug users who committed non-organized drug related crimes and are diverted to the Drug Treatment Court in Ghent. Within this Court, there is not only attention for criminal facts and substance use but also for problems in other life domains. A qualitative study was set up, including in-depth interviews with 10 DTCclients. Results show that DTCclients perceive recovery as a very personal and individual process. Also, specific resources on different levels (individual, social, community) seem to be important in their recovery trajectory.
