samenvatting | In autumn 1941, in Great Britain, the decision was taken to recruit Belgian soldiers for parachutist training. As a consequence, in January 1945, the Belgian Army was able to integrate the British Special Air Service Battalion with the 5th Belgian S.A.S Squadron. However, the evolution of this unit was exceptional in comparison to others of its kind, and the history of its creation remains obscure. The following article will focus on three questions: who was responsible for the creation of the unit? What was the purpose of this creation? And how did the Belgian Army succeed to create an S.A.S. squadron in 1945? The action of the Special Operation Executive (UK), la Deuxième Section (BE), will be explored and related to the broader context of the Belgian government in exile, occupied Belgium, and the British Intelligence Services. |
