abstract

In this paper we outline key theoretical innovations that have been developed over the last fifteen years
in support of the GLM, and which until now, have never been integrated within a single paper. Each
of these ideas is linked to a core assessment or practice component of the GLM and provides greater
research and theoretical justification for the model. The eight core ideas discussed in the paper are: science informed practice, the black box method of identifying causal factors and explanatory targets, the practice framework model, human dignity and human rights, the enactive conception of human agency, motivational systems, dynamic risk and protective factors, and desistance from crime.
